It takes its name from the account of the cow that the Children of Israel were commanded to sacrifice.
As the longest Surah of the Quran it reads almost as a complete manual for the Muslim community, covering belief, prayer, fasting, pilgrimage, charity, trade, debt, marriage and inheritance. It opens by dividing people into the believers, the disbelievers and the hypocrites. It contains Ayat al-Kursi, widely regarded as the greatest verse of the Quran, and its closing two verses are commonly recited at night for protection.
