In just eighteen verses the Surah sets out an entire code of social ethics: verify news before acting on it, reconcile those who quarrel, and avoid mockery, suspicion, spying and backbiting. It concludes that honour lies in piety rather than lineage.
It is named after the private rooms of the Prophet's household mentioned in its opening verses.
It is often described as the Surah of manners.
